Abstract

An alternative reading of the Divided Line passage from Plato’s Republic (509d-511e) is proposed. The four states of the soul are connected to three objective areas. The aim is to show some coherence behind the mismatching numbers, while specifics of Plato’s approach to logic and language are emphasized.
