The Philosophy Roulette Review is a meta-journal of philosophy. It is a review and ranking of already published works of philosophy. Just like other review sites, PRR provides a guide to philosophy that is worth your time.

Articles are read live online @twitch.tv/nogre0 and reviewed with the interactive chat; the catalog of reviews is @youtube.com/@nogre0. Everyone has a chance to discuss the paper and have their reviews included here on the PRR. Frequent reviewers gain ENLIGHTENMENT POINTS, enabling extra features, such as boosting the visibility of their reviews and having their review contributes to the EXPERT ranking of an article.

The Rankings

Our rankings create an evaluation rubric for already published work. They describe the qualities, for better or worse, of contemporary philosophical writing.

brainDance

For papers that have fun ideas or arguments that get you thinking.

Ouroboros

For papers that draw upon ancient ideas and other big thoughts.

Golden Turd

For papers that have a fancy presentation, but don’t actually say anything worthwhile: they are still poop underneath.

The Knife

For sophisticated philosophical argumentation; papers that slice and dice.

Scream

For papers presenting existential or artistic perspectives.

Grapes

For papers that make big claims, but those conclusions are never reached: the argument shrivels up by the end.

Navel

For navel-gazing papers that are directed only at other academics or philosophers: very narrow scope.

Yea - Nay - Meh

These are used to give general approval, disapproval, or meh to a work.

History

Philosophy Roulette started during the Covid19 pandemic as a way to do public philosophy during lockdown. These rankings were conceived as a way to make the reviews more accessible, in lieu of watching long form videos.
